[Journal of a tour in France], 1738 Aug 28 - Sep 6.

Holograph diary of Seward's travels through France in the company of the son of the Earl of Hartford. After leaving Tours on August 20, 1738, he travels to Bourdeaux and Montauban, describing the landscape as well as the architecture and interiors of churches. Along the Garonne River, he notes how unusual it is see peasants wearing stockings or "any shoes but wooden ones." At the end of the diary, he experiences a moment of sublimity upon seeing the Pyrenees. The last pages in the volume contain copies of inscriptions found at Carthagena.
